Securities transaction tax is charged only on selling. Both KOSPI and KOSDAQ are 0.18% (effective 2025). Overseas stocks have no Korean transaction tax.

Capital gains tax (for overseas stocks and major shareholders) is separate. Use the stock transfer tax calculator.

How is stock return calculated?

Stock return is not simply the sell price minus the buy price -- you need to factor in commissions and transaction tax to know the actual amount you take home.

Buy cost = Buy amount + Buy commission
Sell proceeds = Sell amount - Sell commission - Transaction tax
Net profit = Sell proceeds - Buy cost
Return (%) = Net profit / Buy cost x 100

Example -- Buying 100 shares at 10,000 KRW and selling at 11,000 KRW (KOSPI, 0.015% commission): buy cost 1,000,150 KRW, sell proceeds 1,097,856 KRW, net profit 97,706 KRW (return 9.77%).

Frequently Asked Questions

Q. How is the securities transaction tax applied?

The securities transaction tax (증권거래세) is charged only when selling stocks. Since 2025, both KOSPI and KOSDAQ carry a uniform 0.18% rate (Securities Transaction Tax Act, Article 8). No transaction tax applies on purchases -- only brokerage commissions.

Q. How much is the brokerage commission?

It varies by brokerage and trading channel (mobile app, HTS, or branch). Many brokerages offer lifetime zero-commission for non-face-to-face account openings. The default 0.015% in this calculator is a typical online commission rate -- adjust it to match your actual rate.

Q. Can I calculate returns for overseas stocks?

Yes. Select 'Overseas Stocks' as the market type and only the commission is applied, without Korean transaction tax. Note that local transaction taxes (e.g., SEC Fee in the US) and exchange-rate differences are not reflected, so use the result as a reference.

This calculator is for reference only. Actual commission rates vary by brokerage and trading method. Capital gains tax (for overseas stocks or major shareholders) is not included.
